Hi, my name is Faduma. I am a freshman and am studying pre-med. In my free time, I hang out with my friends and family. Also, I like to read. For the in class project, I did research on Helen Keller. Helen Keller was an American author and political activist. Helen Keller was blind and deaf but she wasn't born with it until she was 19 months and it was Illness. As a young women growing up not having the ability to see and hear, she accomplished a lot things in her life.

Hi

Hello my name is ikran I am currently studying nursing and like to reach my goal to become full nursing. My dream is too graduated from Ohio state university which is the top ten universities in untied state.

The profile I like is Lawrence W. “Happy” Davis was amazing I like way he discussion the Pullman porter. He said that the Pullman was intrusting seeing something new every day.  Educated people was working that company “it was the best job a Negro cloud get back you what I mean?”  He shows us how bad the discrimination was back in days.

My name is Brian Wilds, and I’m currently and English major.  I spent thirteen years in retail management after leaving high Scholl.  I found that while I was good at my job it wasn’t my niche.  Originally I started as a psychology major, but found that I had an ability to write prose and poetry.  The life experienced I gained through my life has given me inspiration and structure to my pieces.  I enjoy sports and other hobbies, but have found myself more evolved in reading and writing.  My future goals are to become a professor, and to continue my writings.

We read several everyday people in our last reading.  I found the simplicity of the writing to express several valid factors.   Displaying that it’s not always in the structure and writing, but that it’s in the message.  These everyday people shared with readers their lives and environments, and this is something that readers may have never experienced.  The story of “Steam Train” Maury Graham was one of a unique life style.  His story discussed a way of life that developed tradition and culture within its own realm.    Communication among these individuals was interesting. These individuals are viewed as lower class, but they form stereotypes of people under their social scale.  These pieces all held their own diverse perspectives, and allowed the readers into otherwise ignored views.

First Blog Post

My name is John Massey and I am currently studying business. In my free time I really enjoy reading. Typically I get into non-fiction books that really force me to think. I'm currently reading an interesting book called The Case for Christ, which is about an atheists journey to prove Christianity false by interviewing Christian professors but actually accepts it as truth down the road. I also train and compete in mixed martial arts. It's something that has acted as an outlet in my life. I have competed in three fights with one scheduled in may and it's something that I genuinely have a lot of fun doing.

The profile that was very interesting to me was Maury Graham. I found it very interesting that there was a whole underground sub culture for homeless people. I never knew that this was a chosen lifestyle by people. I always just thought that it was an unfortunate situation that people seemed to find themselves in. I really admired the work ethic displayed by these hobos despite not having a traditional job. I really found the simplicity of this lifestyle very interesting as well. All Maury had to worry about from a day to day basis is who was going to let him work for a meal.

Hello

So introduction, my name is Esah and I'm a security and intelligence major at OSU. As far as careers go, I am 100 percent certain of my major and know for a fact that I will end up being in some form of federal law enforcement. A big lecture I could get into is why the legal system is so vital to our everyday lives, but that would take too long, so I will simply leave it for another time. I just know that out of all there is to do out there in the world, being a keeper of the peace and justice is ultimately where my heart lies.

Today we discussed the first three profiles in our book Holding On, and I think the most interesting profile was the last one about Shield. His character is certainly an interesting one, and at first it definitely seems as though the guy might have a few loose nuts and bolts if you know what I mean. In reality though, I think Shield represents a very real subconscious worry that we all have. In the very beginning of the book, Roth talks about how we should all keep our eyes open while we can because eventually they will close forever. Shield writes feverishly about every passing moment of his life and at the end of his profile highlights the notion that when he is gone, all that will remain are his writings.... and nose hairs. In looking at the grand scheme of things, death has always been a fear and mystery to everyone at some point. To some, religion provides a something after and to others, they simply see death as a nothing. Regardless of how one perceives the notion of "eyes closing forever" the fact remains that once we are gone, how will others remember us and what will remain. For me I see Shield as a man simply more concerned with leaving something when he's gone than most. Truely a very interesting character.
Hello my name is Ayan Ali this is my first year at OSU and I really like it. I drive one hour to Marion. I live in Columbus which is far from Marion in my opinion. I have three sisters and two brothers.  The profiles I read so far I liked was " Stream Train" Maury Graham the most because I thought it was nice to read about hobo's and bum"s. Since I don't know much about hobo's it was nice to know how hobo's live their lives. And I learned the difference between the hobo's and bum's I thought they were the same for some reason.

Introduction and Insight on The World's Longest Diary

Hi all! My name is Eric Pettit and I am a first-year in middle childhood education. I am originally from Tampa, Florida but moved when I was 5 and now live in Delaware.

When first reading the section about Robert Shields, I was taken back. How can a man spend this much time on writing that he admits no one will read? He takes it as far as leaving nostril hair on the bottom of the page so that people will be able to use it for DNA testing some day. He mentions that he cannot leave town because he would fall too far behind on his diary and that would be detrimental.

At first glance, people (like me) may think that he has a bad case of OCD. I think that there are some cool themes at play. For example, memory of the past or the importance of writing in ones life. I feel that we all have things that we do not want to give up in our life and cannot function.

For me, this is Ohio State Sports. I have to watch every football and basketball game no matter where I am or what I am doing. I have asked off from work so that I do not miss a game. I may say, like Shields, that I can stop and that it would not effect me. This is probably not the case.

The only reason that Isay writes about Shields is because it is so unique. The truth is, we all have obsessions whether we realize it or not.
Hey my name is Tyler Craig. I'm Education major studying Sports Leadership here at OSUM. This is my third University in 5 years. My first two years of college I played basketball for a small college in Nashville, TN at Lipscomb University. I graduated from Marysville high school in 2007 and love the game of basketball. I am now the Varsity Assistant at Marysville and have been coaching for 3 years now. I love coaching and spending time with kids. I would like to be a high school coach someday and then hopefully be at the college level. I also love to golf!

Today was my first time in the class, so I don't have the book yet. I researched the one and only Dennis Rodman and some of his attributes. He was very eccentric in the way he played the game of basketball and overall just how he lived. He was a claimed bisexual and once even tried to marry himself. This is all after he tried to have a child with Madonna which didn't work out too well. He broke the social stereotype of a professional athlete, let alone one who was very successful. He not only won NBA championships, but was apart of a team with the greatest basketball player ever in Michael Jordan. Dennis Rodman man, what a guy.

Intro and profile two

Hi, am Aisha.. i am sophomore, am currently majoring at dental hygiene..this is my third quarter coming to Marion. it had been amazing journey for me,  i honestly prefer small campus than a huge campus. getting the opportunity to get feedback from your professors and getting help.

One of the amazing profiles was Lawrence W. "Happy" Davis.. it had more information about the Davis also, it showed me how its had to rise 7 children because my mother had 10 children and i was the last born but i never seen any difficulties in my life. Davis does not only talk about his life he also telling us no matter what happens at the end of the day a parent always have their difficulties rising a child in such a poverty. depending on tips was his life..

Hi my name is Ruth Albright. I am studing to be a vetranarian. I am a mother of 3 children ages 17, 16, and 12. I homeschool 2 of them. I work here on campus in the computer lab and also another job outside of school. I have been out of school for 20 years and am finally pursuing my dreams. I find it very interesting to come back to school and meet fellow students from all walks of life. it has truley been a great experience for me thus far. I enjoy spending time with my children on my free time, we enjoy taking nature walks or going shopping :)

I really enjoyed our book holding on so far, it is a glimpse in other people's lives and gives us a sense of who they were. I really enjoyed Robert Shields longest diary. Although some people may think he is crazy for writting a min. by min. account of his life to him this is something he enjoys, just like a hobby this is his. I myself would not want to spend every waking minute accounting for my every move, but to Mr. Shields this is somehow his life, his passion, his dream and who are we to question if he is sain or not as long as it makes him happy and he is doing what he feels is important then so be it. I mean who knows we all may do things in our lives at one point or other that people may find strange but as long as it makes us happy who cares.

Hello Everyone!

My name is Kara Moore. I am a mother of a 3 year old boy. He takes up a lot of my time if i am not working or doing school work. We like to go to the park and play or go fishing when its nice out. We don't do a lot but we have fun. I am currently studying Animal Science here at Marion OSU. I eventually want to go work at the zoo and work with animals you don't see on a regular basis. One day I would love to travel the world to see different types of animals in their natural environments.
Today, I was able to research a few people who we know as eccentric and not the "norm". I will tell you a little about Howard Hughes and Lady Gaga. I know when I say Lady Gaga some of you think, "not her!". Even though she may come off a little odd she actually studied at a few art schools and this is where she learned it is okay to think a little different than other people and not everyone will always have the same taste in "art" as you. She can be a role model to some people in her way of thinking. The other person, Howard Hughes was a very interesting man to look up to. Hughes invented his own version of a motorized bike at a young age using parts from a steam engine. Not many people can create things or think up different ways of doing things but he did. He was not only an engineer and a film producer, he was also able to set multiple air speed records. This was probably an influence to him creating what we now know as American Airlines. I found him very interesting.

Hiii : )

Hi, my name is Ashley Leitzy. I'm a sophomore and studying fashion and retail studies. I transferred from Shawnee State University, and was a college cheerleader.  During my free, time I like to work out and hang out with my friends and family. I work at The Daily Scoop, which is an ice cream place. This fall I was also a head high school cheerleading coach for varsity and junior varsity.
The person I chose to do my research about was Helen Keller. Helen was a very eccentric person. She had to deal with challanges everyday, because she was blind and deaf. But, after accomplishing her achievements of learning how to do things herself, she begun to teach others how to read, write, and speak. Being blind and deaf, Helen had a different point of view on life. She also had strong views about politics. Eccentric behavior is a challenge for some, because those people are different, and others may not understand their behavior, or see the same views as others.

About Me!!! and a little bit about Happy too :)

My name is Shelby Brooke Terrill, I am a senior here at OSUM and am going into Education with concentrations in English, History, and Science. I went to both Elgin and Highland High Schools and graduated in 2010 from Highland. I have two jobs that keep me pretty busy, but in my spare time I hang out with my fiance and sometimes my five younger siblings playing basketball (or attempting to), soccer (attempting to do that to), kickball (which I can actually do), or volleyball (that has become my family's favorite sport). I like to go to water parks and visit amusement parks with my friends in the summers as well as pools to get a good healthy summer tan.
For the profiles that we  read for today's class, I was most interested in Lawrence "Happy" Davis' story. Lawrence got to meet a lot of amazing people through his job even if he felt all he did was people sit, because I feel like all I do is people sit too the majority of the time, but I get to meet some pretty amazing people too (even if they aren't famous). His experiences made him who he was and even if the life drove him nuts he admits that it was good for him. I even liked the part about how he lied about his age in the very beginning. He's an amazing man and people like this are the ones that I wish I could meet in person.

Aaron Bishop

Hi all, my name is Aaron. I am currently studying general business, but am unsure of my final major. During my free time I enjoy doing things outdoors, as in fishing and hiking. My favorite sport is baseball and I played this all my life and still do today for a hobby. I like hanging out with my friends and family.
For the in class project, I did research on Helen Keller. She was very interesting and was blind and deaf. She was eccentric because she was blind and deaf and learned how to life her life around that huge obstacle. She wrote several books and she helped raise money and teach blind and deaf people how to write, read, and speak. The thing that struck me the most about this person is how she did what she wanted and didn't let anything stop her. She did not live by the "normal lifestyle" and that didn't stop her one bit.

Hello!

Hey! My names Katelan. I’m a freshman and am completely undecieded in what I want to do these next three years, and life in general. In my free time I really like to be outdoors and taking photographs. Maybe in the future I can incorporate these into a career.

The profile that interested me most was Robert Shields, the author of the World’s Longest Diary. I really found it interesting that he spends so much time devoted to just writing. Many authors spend most of their life writing, but to publish it and have possibly thousands read it. Shields just wrote to pass the time, to complete his life. I guess I can find that almost something to admire, because it may not have mattered to anyone else, but it mattered to him and that is all that mattered. Hopefully in the future all of his time won’t be wasted, and someone will read, and possibly put a use to his works.
